Dancing my way through life…
In the summer of 2010, my six year old niece, Rhiannon, asked me if I would hula hoop with her. After a substantial effort that sunny afternoon – out of breath and abs sore (partly from laughing so hard) – I decided to incorporate the hoop into my regular fitness regimen. I never thought that it would have taken me to the point it has today.
In the fall that year, I visited Portland and I saw my friend Cristina perform a few tricks with the hoop. I was immediately determined to master these tricks and many, many more. Once back home in Milwaukee, my curiosity continued to grow around this beautiful circle, commonly called the hula hoop and I did all that I could to learn more about hooping.
A strong core and a smaller waistline are just the beginning of all that comes from regularly hooping. For me, that’s now just an added bonus. It relaxes the mind, relieves stress and builds self-confidence. It’s my release, my expression, my movement meditation.
Teaching brings me the greatest joy. Connecting with others and sharing what you love is what life is all about. I hope that each and every one of you finds yourself in the hoop someday soon. You won’t regret it.
